Nigeria, Niger Republic vow to strengthen economic, security cooperation

Nigeria and Niger Republic have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in the areas of economy and security, following a high-level meeting between their foreign ministers in Niamey on Wednesday.

The pledge was made during a working visit by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, to his Nigerien counterpart, Mr Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Nigeriens Abroad.

During the meeting, both ministers discussed several matters of mutual interest, with a particular emphasis on enhancing cross-border trade, improving market linkages, and advancing cooperation in energy and infrastructure development.

The two countries also underscored the importance of maintaining joint efforts to counter terrorism along their shared border. To this end, they agreed to sustain collaboration between their respective defence ministries.

As part of efforts to foster regional integration, the ministers reviewed joint infrastructure projects including the Kano-Katsina-Jibiya-Maradi railway, the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, the Trans-Saharan Highway, and the Trans-Saharan Fiber Optic project. They further agreed to expand cooperation in socio-political, economic, scientific, and cultural spheres.

To consolidate existing gains, both nations committed to revitalising the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission (NNJC) and proposed the establishment of a Joint Consultative Forum to facilitate dialogue among key stakeholders from both countries on shared challenges and opportunities.

The visit concluded with Mr Sangaré accepting an invitation to pay a reciprocal official visit to Nigeria, with the date to be announced through diplomatic channels.

The meeting reflected the enduring fraternal relations between the two West African neighbours, who expressed a common resolve to strengthen bilateral ties for the benefit of their peoples.
