The principal officers, Federal School of Surveying, Oyo, headed by Dr Mrs Dupe Olayinka-Dosumu, the rector of the institution, council members, representatives of Honorable Minister of Works and Housing Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola and senior staff members, at the 21st convocation ceremony of the Ivory Tower, held on Thursday, December15,2021 at the school premises.
The Rector, Federal School of Surveying, Oyo, Mrs Dupe Olayinka Dosumu, has declared that Nigeria would need the Surveyors’ surveillance intelligence services for its survival in security, effective town planning, as well as curbing sudden collapse of buildings in our society will be a thing of the past.
She made this remark recently at a press conference organized by the institution to mark the 21st convocation of the school.
According to her, the professional intelligence services of surveyors cover the whole earth; the land, waters and space, stressing that Nigeria is blessed with surveyor training centres for both middle and high-level manpower for our society. She also stated that surveyors have the technology to foresee and build on the verge of collapsing in the city and they will do the needful to safe lives before it will finally collapse. She also noted that Surveyors should be involved in the construction of bridges and houses for its longevity uses.
Speaking about the background of the school she said: “Federal School of Surveying, formerly known as School of Surveying, came into being in July 1, 1908, in Lagos, as a professional institute to produce Assistance Surveyors during the colonial era. Many people from different part of African continent and elsewhere passed through the school in the field of Surveying and Geoinformatics at certificate level.
“The school was moved to Ibadan in 1926. When University of Ibadan was established in 1948, it became a Department in the institution, until 1934 when it was moved down to Oyo town as an autonomy institute to produce professional Surveyors and Geoinformatics at certificate level.
“In 1990, the school was upgraded by the Act of Parliament under the Federal Ministry of Housing and works, to offer National Diploma, Higher National Diploma and Post Higher National Diploma programmes in all related Surveying and Geoinformatics professional courses.
“Today, Federal School of Surveying has the mandate and is well equipped to offer courses in professional programmes in water, land and space Surveying at National Higher National and Post Higher National Diplomas in the country.
“Some of the new courses are Photolithographic, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Computer Science. Additional programmes include Cartography and Geographic and Information Systems. A new curriculum is undergoing a development process for Hydrographic Surveying professional course to be accredited by the National Board for Technical Education(NBTE).
“My administration is setting up the school on the pedestal of its metamorphosis from its monotechnic school status into a degree-awarding institution in various fields of surveying and other disciplines. Restructuring and updating exercise is ongoing on the campus to meet the requirement for Bachelor of Technology degree programmes accreditation. As of now, we have the recourses for the effective takeoff.”
She said further that one of the salient advantages and selling points of the school is that the school is practical oriented academic and professional-based institution, these advantages make the graduates of the school to be self-sufficient with a lot of employment opportunities available for them in the society.
She said that if the government would value surveyors professional skills, appreciate and employ their services in the nation-building process, especially on land space and waters, Nigeria will move forward technologically.
She lamented that Nigerian Surveyors are under utilised in Nigeria. According to her, if the government will employ the services of surveyors, there will be a transformation in the country.
“The main challenge of the institution is not just about funding there should more commitment to the progress of the school. The act that established the school should be reviewed and amended to give room for its advancement. School of Surveying is no longer an analogue training centre, but strictly, it is digital and technology-driven education institution.
We train our students with skills to monitor, measure and capture any hidden things on the land, space and waters many miles away with the use of technology. If the government would develop the school to an international standard as a degree-awarding institution, it will draw international students from our neighbouring countries.
So far, this is the only special school of surveying in Africa. I want to use this opportunity to advise all parents in the country whose children are still in secondary schools to consider the Federal School of Surveying for their children. It is the best school for our young stars for relevant skill development. Your children may find it easy to secure jobs more so, it is a self–employed profession.
