Nigeria needs quality leadership —Bishop Akinlalu

Published by

Bishop of the Diocese of Oke-Osun, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), The Right Reverend Dr Abraham Olaoluwa Akinlalu, has said the nation needs quality leadership.

He made the declaration at the second session of the ninth synod of the Diocese of Oke-Osun, Gbongan, Osun State, stating that “we have not had leaders in this country, but rulers.”

Delivering his presidential address at St. David’s Anglican Church, Abiri, Ikoyi, venue of the synod, he noted, “Our leaders have fought gallantly for us to have our independence, but after their demise, we have been experiencing rulers instead of leaders.

“A leader is someone who empathises with the life situations of the people he is supposed to lead. He sees their problems or predicaments as his own. In any way or form he wants to change his country, he leads the way.”

Restating that if rulers were leaders, their first priority should create employment for youths, he explained that the purported salaries and allowances of senators were enough to provide jobs for the unemployed and increase workers’ wages.

He lamented the lack of peace and unity due to the challenges of unpaid salaries and pensions, lack of good roads for marketers to transport wares and incessant strikes affecting the education sector.

Bishop Akinlalu enjoined Nigerians to seek divine intervention, stating that “God is ever faithful to restore understanding to the mind of our rulers so that they may become leaders. The present administration talks of change. Let positive change reflect in the lives of the people.”

The bishop appealed to the Osun State government to allow the missionary schools of the Muslims and Christians to remain.

Meanwhile, Bishop of Awori Anglican Diocese, Badagry, Right Reverend Dr Johnson Akinwande Atere, in his sermon at the thanksgiving service to round off the synod, lamenting the challenges in the country, said: “God does not fail His people and with patience, one would get to the Promised Land.”

In order to enjoy God’s promises, Bishop Atere enjoined Christians to study the word of God; believe in Christ; attend Bible study; be fervent in serving Christ; stop adulterating churches; wait on God; be in tune with God and live in obedience to the gospel.
