Nigeria ill prepared for care of road traffic injuries

Nigerian Academy of Neurological Surgeons has decried increasing cases of road accidents in Nigeria despite the country lacking the means to properly look after such mishaps.

President, Nigerian Academy of Neurological Surgeons, Professor Ade Malomo stated that 70 per cent of all road traffic accidents occur in developing countries like Nigeria even though these countries have no means of properly looking after its victims.

Malomo declared that the problem was worsened by poor education on proper road use, licensing procedure, vehicles and roads and dearth of understanding on proper handling of road accident victims.

The expert, who remarked that Nigeria had lacked an organised way of retrieving road accident victims, stated that “most people do not only suffer death, but survivors also suffer disabilities that are preventable.”

According to him, “the economic recession has made more people to develop road rage, unable to maintain their vehicles, disrespectful of the road and unhappy. Unfortunately, when they become involved in road accident, they cannot afford their treatment.”

Malomo stated that the coming Christmas and New year season was likely to cause an increase in the incidence and severity of road traffic accidents, stressing that many of these accidents were preventable.

The surgeon stressed the need for Nigerians to relax, have a high self esteem, and be mindful of other road users’ safety while driving.

The expert stressed the need for people to be enrolled under the Health Insurance scheme, saying it can help also to provide some support for the care of accident victims.

“With recession, everything is bad. In fact, the cost of drugs has increased because most are imported. Also, level of poverty has increased. As such the best option is to prevent disability or death due to accident.

“Sickness is a deadly thing in Nigeria as of today; moreover opportunities to get to health care are less. So, individually and collectively we must work at checking injuries.”
