Nigeria can reduce unemployment by focusing on global markets — Expert

Published by

A recruitment expert, Emmanuel Azor, has stated that unemployment in Nigeria can be reduced by building technological skills and fostering digital literacy among the citizens.

Azor stated that the government could reduce unemployment by organising vocational training and education programs and subsidized coding boot camps.

Speaking in an interview with our correspondent on Wednesday , he noted that with the county’s youthful, educated, and digitally savvy population, there’s a strong foundation to build a competitive workforce that appeals to global employers.

He said, “Developing a workforce ready for the demand of the global tech industry requires investment in relevant skills, such as software development, data analysis, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. The government can create partnerships with global tech firms to sponsor training programs that can fast-track skill acquisition for young Nigerians.

“The government can also create initiatives to bolster vocational skills, which can enhance employability, particularly for roles that don’t require a traditional degree but demand specialized skills. With government support or subsidies, the government can encourage affordable or free coding boot camps for promising talent, which can make Nigerian tech professionals more competitive globally.”

He also urged the federal and state governments to prioritise energy solutions, from national grid improvements to incentivizing renewable energy adoption.

Reliable internet connectivity, affordable data, and a strong telecommunications network are essential for remote work. The government can support infrastructure development by partnering with telecom companies to lower data costs, especially for high-bandwidth needs like videoconferencing and cloud services.

Frequent power outages can hamper productivity and deter companies from hiring remotely. The government should prioritize energy solutions, from national grid improvements to incentivizing renewable energy adoption, which could directly benefit the digital workforce.”

Azor also asked the government to provide tax benefits or deductions for international companies that hire Nigerian talent, which could make Nigeria a more attractive hiring destination.

He said, “The government can also establish “digital free zones” to encourage tech companies to set up remote offices. Also, the government can simplify work permits for Nigerian professionals to make it easier for them to work for international companies. A visa program that allows Nigerians to work remotely for foreign companies while living in Nigeria could help bridge employment gaps.

“The federal government can actively promote Nigeria’s talent on a global scale. A campaign showcasing the tech prowess of Nigerian professionals could be run in collaboration with industry stakeholders to create a positive image of Nigerian talent abroad.

“Collaboration with platforms like LinkedIn, GitHub, and specialized recruitment agencies can spotlight Nigerian professionals, making it easier for global companies to discover their skills and achievements. Government-backed funds and grants for tech startups, along with the creation of innovation hubs, could drive self-employment and job creation within Nigeria.

“Partnering with multinational companies to establish incubators and accelerators within Nigeria can increase the visibility of Nigerian innovation, encouraging hiring within these ecosystems and potentially exporting talent to global roles.”
