Nigeria can achieve food sufficiency through ‘Value Chain Development’

Published by

Executive director of the Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute (ARMTI), Dr Olufemi Oladunni, has reiterated the need to strengthen agricultural commodity value chain in the country.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a five-day training workshop organized by the institute for managers of inputs/production and marketing in the Agric Rural Development (ARD), Dr. Oladunni emphasized that main focus on agricultural practices by majority of Nigeria farmers is inadequate to meet the consumption needs of the nation.

The executive director, who was represented at the ceremony by a director in the institute, Mallam Abdulrahman Raji, said that agricultural practices alone cannot translate into the wealth creation and commercial agriculture that the nation needs for food and agricultural sufficiency.

“This is why this training is organized”, he said, “to strengthen the actors along the value chain, particularly focusing on the input/production and marketing managers, providing them with the requisite skills so that farmers can take full advantage of the benefits of the value chain development (VCD) to lift them out of poverty”.

He also said that the five-day training programme has 50 participants drawn from all over the country, comprising of production managers, input managers and marketers.

“They are expected to return to their individual states and entrench the impact of this training on the value chains in their domains. The training, which involves class facilitation, individual and group works, case studies and presentations as well as a study visit, aimed to give practical demonstration to the participants”.

One of the ARMTI trainers, Millicent Onkpe, explained that the participants have been carefully selected as key players in the value chain and “who, after being trained like this, would be able to impact on farmers directly across the nation thereby, greatly transforming the level of yield and output through its spiral effect.”
