Nigeria Army, Ilorin varsity sign MoU on officers’ training

THE Nigeria Army on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Ilorin for the training of senior military officers in peace and security/strategic studies at Masters level.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, the institution’s Vice Chancellor, signed for the University, while the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, signed on behalf of the Nigeria Army.

Buratai, who was represented by the Corps Commander, Nigerian Army Education Corps (NAEC), Brig Gen Lawal Abdullahi, said that the partnership would promote intellectual development among military personnel.

“With this MoU, senior officers of the Nigerian Army will be able to undertake academic training at the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS) of the University of Ilorin,” he said.

Buratai said that the army had special respect for the academic prowess of the University of Ilorin and was confident that the partnership would yield the desired fruits.

“I am optimistic that graduates of the Higher Executive Management courses, as well as those with Masters’ degrees from the University of Ibadan, will be able to pursue their PhD programme at the University of Ilorin,” he said.

He hinted that an Army University would soon be established, stressing that the institution would require lecturers from the University of Ilorin to fully take off.

In his remarks, Ambali noted that education had given the military an edge in the discharge of its constitutional duties.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof Gabriel Olatunji, Ambali commended the Nigerian Army for its interest in academics, saying that the partnership would benefit the nation.

He said that the university would soon establish a military branch of its alumni association, and assured Buratai that the University’s Senate would soon approve the proposed award of degrees by the Nigerian Army School of Education (NASE), Sobi, Ilorin.
