Niger SUBEB chair lists achievements in basic education

THE executive chairman, Niger State Universal Basic Education Board, Alhaji Alhassan Mohammed Bawa Niwero, has disclosed that about 2,000 teachers have been recruited and ready to be posted to their respective places of primary assignment.

This he said was part of efforts to further improve learning and teaching across public primary and junior secondary schools in the state.

The SUBEB boss revealed this in his remarks while reacting to the honorary ‘Achiever’s Award’ bestowed on him by the pupils of Dr. Umaru Bahago Primary School in Minna, the state capital, for his contributions to the growth and development of the school.

While appreciating the award from the pupils whose school won N250,000 from the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEC) in Abuja recently, Niwero dedicated the award to members, management and staff of the board whom he described “unique, hardworking gentlemen and women of impeccable character.”

He attributed the achievements so far recorded by the board in the past four years to the political will and the support of the governor of Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello.

Niwero listed some of the achievements of the board under his watch to include the construction of over 1,000 classrooms and renovation of over 600 buildings in parts of the state, as well as procurement of furniture and modern toilet facilities for primary schools in parts of the state.

Others, according to him, include training and retraining of about 13,000 teachers.

He said further: “Between the period that the incumbent All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello came on board in the state in 2015 and now, the board has intervened severally in primary and junior secondary schools in the state.

“But don’t forget that there were backlogs of interventions that were not assessed by the previous government which was supposed to be 2013, 2014 and even 2015 interventions. With the passion for education of the state governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, he keyed in and spurred SUBEB to do whatever was possible to be able to assess those funds, and he was able to pay his own counterpart funds,” Alhaji Niwero said.

“You can see that since the current government came on board, there has never been a time that we’ve missed the payment of teachers’ salaries. And I want to reassure you that with the remaining period of our four-year tenure, we want to continue the good work we are doing in the state SUBEB.”
