Niger POWA calls for end to gender-based violence against women

Wife of the Niger State Commissioner of Police, and the chairperson of the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), Rosina Ebenezer Shauwulu Danmamman, has enjoined relevant stakeholders to come together to combat gender-based violence against women.

Danmamman made the call during the celebration of the 2025 International Women’s Day of POWA, Niger State chapter, with the theme ‘Accelerate Action’, in Minna, the State capital.

She emphasised the need for positive actions to promote women’s rights and empowerment.

The state’s POWA chairperson noted that women should no longer be relegated to the background but should occupy their rightful positions in society to enable them to contribute their quota to its growth and development.

“Gone are the days when women were seen as belonging to the kitchen,” she said.

Danmamman cited MNgozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, as an example of a woman who has excelled alongside men, encouraging women to draw inspiration from such role models.

As part of the celebration, POWA invited 48 students from the Police Secondary School, Minna, for a lecture on menstrual hygiene delivered by Dr .Valda Martins,a lecturer from FUTMinna who emphasised the importance of proper hygiene during menstruation to prevent infections.

The students, including Miriam Manasseh and Hassan Maryam, commended the POWA Chairperson for organising the lecture, which helped to educate them on maintaining good hygiene during their menstrual cycles.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of packs of sanitary pads to each of the 48 students by Danmamman.
