Niger state government has disclosed readiness to construct eight modern trailer parks across the state to take advantage of its proximity to Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and gateway to the Southern parts of the country to boost Interna Generated Revenue (IGR).
The State Commissioner for Transport, Hajiya Hadizah Idris Kuta, stated this in an interactive session with the newsmen on the sidelines of the inauguration of the newly elected officials of the State’s chapter of the Nigeria Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) held on Monday in Minna, the Niger state capital.
Kuta explained that as the gateway to the North and South, there is a need for the state government to take advantage of the situation and invest in the transport sector towards boosting its revenue base for economic development and prosperity.
According to her, some of the areas where the trailer parks are to be constructed include Tafa, Lambatta, Mokwa, Tegina and Bida, among others.
In his remarks, the Chairman Niger state chapter of the NARTO, Alhaji Hassan Abubakar Shiroro, expressed happiness over the approval by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago for the construction of eight motor parks in the state, adding that this would help in bringing development to the grassroots level, improve transportation of goods and services as well as enhance the economy of the state.
On the Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, the union has entered an agreement with the Niger State Government for the supply of vehicles on a hire-purchase basis, adding that he would want his members to be supplied with Gulf, Sharon and other smaller vehicles to boost their economic status.
He, however, said that the brand new vehicles provided by the Niger state government following the directive of NARTO Patron who doubles as the Niger state Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, cannot be used by his members, due to their high-cost prices and should be changed with the smaller ones to enable his members benefit from such gesture.
Chairman Electoral Committee, Dr Mohammed Abdullahi Tetengi, applauded the NARTO Chairman, Alhaji Hassan Abubakar Shiroro, in conjunction with members of his committee for making their assignment a huge success and advised the elected officials to be fair and just to all.
