Niger govt partners military to reopen base in Alawa community

Niger State Acting Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, has announced that the Military High Command in Abuja is currently investigating the recent security challenges in Alawa Community, Shiroro Local Government Area.

The military is also considering reopening a base in the troubled community and its surrounding areas.

The Acting Governor made this statement at the Government House in Minna after receiving relief items, mainly food supplies, from Senator Mohammed Sani Musa, who represents Niger East Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

The donations were intended for the victims of the recent bandit attacks in Alawa.

Garba explained that the move to possibly reopen the military base is aimed at enhancing security in the area, which has been the target of frequent bandit attacks in recent months.

Additionally, the Acting Governor noted that calm has returned to the Barkuta community in the Bosso Local Government Area following a recent communal crisis between Gbagyi farmers and Fulani herders.

A delegation led by Mohammed Baba Sule, a legislative aide to Senator Musa, presented the relief items to the Acting Governor at the Government House.

They cited security concerns as the reason for not directly delivering the materials to the affected residents.

The recent attack on Alawa resulted in the deaths of at least 13 farmers who had ventured out from an IDP camp to tend to their farmlands.

The Hakimi of Alawa, Mallam Ibrahim Salihu, who spoke in Hausa, assured that the relief items would be distributed to the victims and the families of those who were killed.

The reopening of the military base is expected to provide much-needed relief to the affected communities and ensure a safer environment for residents and farmers.
