Niger Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago has inaugurated the implementation committee for the take-off of the State University of Education, Minna.
Performing the inauguration over the weekend,(on Saturday) at the Government House, Minna, Governor Bago called on the members of the committee to shy away from bureaucratic judgement and work hard for the quick take-off of the state university.
The Governor also charged the committee to articulate project development implementations that will require community and private sector participation as well as determine new prospects for manpower requirements for the university and fill the gap among others.
Governor Bago also disclosed that he has directed that N20 billion be included in the 2024 budget for the take-off of the university.
He further explained that the take-off of the University of Education will not prevent the Niger State College of Education (COE), Minna from running its programmes, saying, that; “the COE will be operating under the University”.
Governor Bago, who emphasized his administration’s plans to make the state a hub of education, noted that plans were in pipeline for the establishment of the University of Agriculture in Mokwa, the University of Energy and Renewable Energy, in Shiroro, as well as the University of Medicine in Suleja, respectively.
The Chairman of the Implementation Committee and former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Mohammed Kuta Yahaya who spoke on behalf of other Committee members, appreciated the Governor for finding them worthy to serve and promised to work diligently to ensure that the University becomes one of the best in the country.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the incumbent Secretary to the State Government(SSG) Alhaji Abubakar Usman is the Co-Chairman of the Committee, while the Secretary is the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Lands and Survey, Dr. Abdul Hussaini and Murtala Baba Gana who will serve as the assistant secretary of the committee.
It was further learned that the terms of reference of the Committee, include developing a transition programme for the full take-off of the University and determining the financial and infrastructural requirements by the extant rules of the University laws and that of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Highlight of the event was the presentation of academic brief and the University’s law books to the Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Kuta Yahaya.
