Niger govt donates digital equipment to Nigeria Immigration Service

The Niger State Government has donated digital equipment estimated at several million naira to the State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

Presenting the equipment at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Minna, the Commissioner for Communication Technology and Digital Economy, Suleiman Isah, said the intervention was aimed at eliminating difficulties experienced by citizens in data capturing when processing their passports.

He mentioned that the State Government, through the Ministry, has been receiving complaints about the difficulties and stress experienced by citizens in obtaining their passports, hence the intervention to address the challenges.

He explained that considering the anticipated increase in traffic during the forthcoming Hajj operations, the State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, emphasized that as a Ministry, “we should look into how we can improve that process.”

Suleiman Isah stressed, “We expect that any citizen of Niger State who applies for a passport should be able to have a turnaround time of 24-48 hours for data capturing. This will increase the speed not just for Hajj operations, but also for students who have scholarships abroad and are forced to forfeit them due to delays in passport processing.”

He expressed optimism that with the five complete sets of equipment provided, the process will become faster and easier for the citizens, especially Nigerlites.

Receiving the items, the Acting Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Niger State Command, Emmanuel Eche, on behalf of the Comptroller-General of the Service, Mrs. Kemi Nanna Nandap, appreciated the State Government, under the leadership of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, for the donation of the items.

He described the gesture as a first of its kind in recent times in Nigeria, emphasizing that the donation will not only greatly improve the services of the Command but also assist the citizens of Niger State and the nation as a whole.

The items presented include desktop computers, signature pads, digital cameras, tripods, fingerprint scanners with the capacity for four fingers at a time, among others.

Highlights of the event include the presentation of a letter of appreciation to the Commissioner for Communication Technology and Digital Economy and photographs.
