Niger govt condemns attack on 13-year-old pastoralist, offers condolences

The Niger State Government has commiserated with a 13-year-old pastoralist boy whose hands were chopped off recently by some yet-unidentified suspected farmers in the Lapai local government area of the state.

This was following a sympathy visit to the victim at the weekend (Saturday) by the Hon. Commissioner for Nomadic and Pastoral Affairs, Alhaji Umar Ahmed Rebe, at the General Hospital Lapai, where he had been on admission for medical treatment admitted by medical personnel in the hospital shortly after the attack.

The Hon. Commissioner, in a shocked state, commiserated with the boy’s parents over the unfortunate incident, which he described as inhumane and barbaric.

Recall that the victim, after he was declared missing for 24 hours by his parents, was later found motionless in excruciating pain and in a pool of his own blood as his assailants were said to have abandoned him in a thorny bushy road path area in the village, allegedly mistaken for a dead person, but not knowing that the little boy was still alive.

Still, he was to have fainted at the time of his vicious attack by the fleeing suspects. thinking that he was dead.

According to the boy, he could not remember nor recognise in physical terms the persons who dealt a dead blow to him and ruined him for life, allegedly for no plausible reasons.

The Hon.Commissioner,Alhaji Umar Ahmed Rebe, in conjunction with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, was apparently distraught after seeing the pitiable condition of the 13-year-old pastoralist boy.

He thereby pacified and advised his parents to calm down, urging them to see the attack on the boy as fate from the Almighty Allah and seek its reward.

He, however, promised that the fleeing culprits would no doubt reap what they sow once identified and apprehended by the law enforcement agents.

He then ordered the transfer of the patient to Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) Specialist Hospital, Minna, for proper care and treatment.

The Commissioner added that the boy, when recovered, will be sponsored by the Niger State Government in compensation for the atrocities inflicted on him.

Meanwhile, the commissioner has expressed shock and disappointment at the recent recurrence of condemnable acts by some suspected criminal elements in Beji Community, Bosso LGA of the state, where unidentified numbers of Fulanis were reportedly killed by people suspected to be Gbagyi Vigilantes Corps.

He, however, lamented that despite concerted efforts being made by the government in collaboration with the security agencies to restore peace and harmony in the area, they have so far remained futile.

He expressed the hope that normalcy will be restored, for according to him, injustice and jungle justice have no room to hide under the incumbent Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago-led administration in the state.
