Niger/ECOWAS: Chinese construction company suspends Kandadji Dam projects

A Chinese company ( C.G.G.C) has suspended the ongoing Kandadji dam Project and the dismissal of workers.

It was gathered that the suspension of activities on the project is as a result of the political turbulence that occurred on July 26, 2023 in Niger, which makes the security situation is becoming increasingly worrisome.

According to a statement by the Chinese firm asserted that,”In the face of force majeure, we find ourselves forced to stop all construction activities for a week and proceed to phased termination of local workers’ contracts.

It said, “And it should be emphasised that the termination of the contract due to force majeure would not involve the compensation of fired employees.

The Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO), the European Union(EU) and the World Bank have all imposed financial sanctions on the country, making it impossible to settle accounts for the company.

Meanwhile,a former rebel leader and politician in Niger Republic has launched a rebel movement opposing the military government that took power in the July 26 coup in the country.

Al Jazeera reports that this is the first sign of internal resistance to the new junta in this strategically important Sahel country.

It quoted the head of the new movement, Rhissa Ag Boula saying his new Council of Resistance for the Republic (CRR) was formed to reinstate the overthrown president, Mohamed Bazoum who has been in detention at his residence since the military takeover.

Ag Boula’s statement also said it supports ECOWAS and any other international actors seeking to restore constitutional order in Niger, adding that it would make itself available to the ECOWAS bloc for any useful purpose.
