Niger Attack: Army Chief vows continuous fight against banditry

Following Troops’ encounter with insurgents in  Zungeru , Shiroro Local Government Areas  of Niger state, in which some gallant troops of the Nigerian Army  paid the supreme price in defence of the Nation against insurgency activities, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja on Wednesday visited the Troops of Forward Operating Base Erena  and vowed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, AFN would sustain the ongoing offensive war against insurgent activities Nationwide despite all odds

 

This was contained in a statement made available to Defence Correspondents in Abuja by the Director, Army Public Relations, Brigadier Onyema Nwachukwu

 

He said that the Army Chief who arrived the scene of the incident on Tuesday night was briefed on the current security situation in the area by the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj Gen Bamidele Alabi.

 

According to the statement,  addressing the troops soon after the brief, the COAS urged them to rally together and be more resolute in bringing the nation’s adversaries to their knees and restore sanity in troubled areas.

 

He maintained that the fight against insurgents and bandits ‘ is a just cause in defence of Nigerians and the nation.

 

According to the Army Chief,   “Protecting lives and defending your nation are the noblest service anyone can offer. You are, therefore in the noble profession of arms and must not allow your morale to dwindle. We must defeat the adversaries of our people and take back every inch of space where they are hibernating in our land”, he added.

 

The statement added that Gen Lagbaja assured the troops that he would do all within available resources to give Nigerian Army personnel and their families the best in terms of welfare.

 

He disclosed that this was topmost in the pillars of his Command Philosophy and directed the immediate reinforcement of the troops with additional combat enablers to enhance their operational effectiveness.

 

Recall that the troops were reportedly ambushed on Monday by the insurgents, during which some of the gallant troops paid the supreme price while others sustained various degree of injuries
