Niger State House of Assembly has called for an upward review of monthly pension paid to retired civil servants in the state with the view to improve their social and economic well-being.
This followed a motion moved by the member representing Edati Constituency, Hon. Ahmed Muhammed during plenary on Tuesday.
The lawmaker explained that according to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, pension shall be reviewed every five years or together with any state civil service salary review.
Ahmed noted that some retirees are still receiving N3,000 as a monthly pension in the state, describing the condition of the retirees as pathetic.
He said that most of the affected retirees were in precarious conditions, highlighting that, they sacrificed their lives in the services of the state.
Contributing to the debate, member representing Tafa Constituency, Hon.Muhammad Sani Idris stressed the need for the state government to put in place mechanisms for upward review of pensions in the state to cushion the economic hardship confronting the retirees who have worked meritoriously for the development of the state.
