Nigerian in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has urged Diaspora groups to emulate Zumunta Association in the act of demonstrating their commitment towards humanity with the spirit of giving back to the Community in Nigeria.
The Chairman of NiDCOM, Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in her special remarks at the 3rd of Zumunta Association USA Inc. Benevolent Palliative Project Awards in Abuja said Zumunta Association USA Inc has been involved in benevolent projects in Nigeria, the Republic of Philippines and Haiti adding that it also has an active scholarship Programmes supporting students in Nigerian Universities.
Dabiri-Erewa who was represented by the NiDCOM’s Secretary, Engr Yakubu Sule Bassi, explained that the palliative project presentation was first carried out in 2021 but the Association decided to collaborate with NiDCOM for the first time in 2022, as a way of demonstrating their commitment towards achieving the objectives of national development in Nigeria after an elaborate brief and awareness on the mandates of establishment and purpose of the Commission.
She, therefore, said the synergy of purpose between Zumunta and NiDCOM is appreciated and highly recommended for other Nigerians in Diaspora groups to emulate.
“The act of demonstrating their commitment towards humanity through the NGOs is also to be emulated by various associations In the Diaspora with the spirit of giving back to the Community in Nigeria.
“With the establishment of State Diaspora Focal Point Offices and appointment of State Diaspora Focal Point Officers (SDFPOs), there is a direct link with the various federating states of Nigeria.
“Here present today, are selected beneficiary states namely, Yobe, Zamfara, Kebbi, Jigawa and Katsina and several NGOs who will be presented with a cheque of Seven Hundred Thousand Naira (N700,000) to help execute set of palliative projects.
“Other Diaspora groups are therefore urged to emulate this patriotic project by Zumunta Association USA Inc. This country belongs to us all and we must work together to ensure its growth by bringing back home development that will encourage the change we envisage and I believe Nigerians in the Diaspora are positioned to be a catalyst towards accelerated development in Nigeria.”
Dabiri-Erewa also calls on the beneficiaries to make a very judicious and appreciative use of the palliative.
“Do not misuse this privilege which have been sacrificially given to you by our people in the diaspora. This is so as to encourage them to do more for our national development.”
She said Nigerians in Diaspora have embarked on several projects in their states, providing employment for youths and skills acquisition.
“Zumunta Association USA Inc is also doing same and even supporting individuals for medical treatments, scholarship programs, renovations of primary schools and drilling of portable water boreholes in states in the North to mention a few,” she said.
Earlier, the President of Zumunta Association USA Inc., Sunday Bitrus, who was represented by the Vice President, Rhoda Embu reiterated that the association’s commitment is to continue giving back and making a meaningful impact on the lives of fellow Nigerians, both at home and abroad.
He explained that the flagship scholarship program has illuminated the paths of over 5,000 science students from Northern Nigeria, disbursing over N100 million since its inception.
“We receive approximately 2,000 requests annually from across the nation, underscoring the urgent need for support and donors to expand our efforts.
“We’ve made significant strides in aiding underprivileged communities through the Zumunta Palliative project in collaboration with NIDCOM, providing grants and partnering with over 30 NGOs across Nigeria.”
She also disclosed that year, the Association has adopted a more structured approach to their awards.
“We intend to collaborate with government initiatives to reach more people. The grants will be used to enroll vulnerable populations in Northern Nigeria in the Essential Health Care Package programs.
“Our goal is to contribute to reducing the burden of diseases such as malaria, typhoid, and under-5 mortality, and we call upon the government to support our efforts alongside our partner NGOs,” she stated.
