THE Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to help in tackling the menace of fake insurance cover being paraded by some drivers in the country.
Chairman of NIA, Mr Olusegun Omosehin, made the appeal when he led a delegation of some members of the governing council to pay a working visit to the Corps Marshal, Mr Dauda Ali Biu, in Abuja.
In line with the theme of Mr. Omosehin’s tenure: “Expanding the Frontiers of Insurance through Partnership and Stakeholders’ Engagement,” he told Mr Biu that the purpose of the visit was to strengthen the relationship between the NIA and FRSC and to seek other areas of mutual collaboration between the two bodies.
In a statement, the Deputy Director, Corporate Communications, Human Resource & Administration at NIA, Mr Davis Iyasere said the Corps Marshal enjoined the Association to maintain interaction that is more frequent and extend same to other enforcement agencies.
He advised that when adequate public awareness on the benefits of insurance are created, more vehicle owners would be encouraged to embrace insurance.
The NIA Chairman reiterated the support of his organisation to the FRSC, and seized the opportunity to felicitate Mr Biu on his appointment, while commending the good work of the corps in curbing road accidents through periodic road checks, which he added is impacting positively on the motor vehicle administration in the country.
Omosehin urged the FRSC to intensify its road safety campaign by stressing the need for motorists to obtain the requisite insurance policies in line with extant laws of the federation.
He said the “NIA will continue to be a strong ally and do all within its powers to support the Corps Marshal and his team. Our appeal is that the FRSC should continue to help ensure the validation of genuine insurance in line with the law.”
Omosehin assured that the NIA would reinvigorate its collaboration with the FRSC by ensuring that motor vehicle accident victims are adequately compensated.
This, he said, would be done through continuous access to the Nigerian insurance industry database platform that would aid verification of insurance documents presented by motorists to the FRSC field officers which should include passenger liability cover.
Also, the Director-General of NIA, Mrs. Yetunde Ilori, pledged that the association would work to deliver on expectations and implored the FRSC to continue its good work of restoring sanity on our roads.
At the end of the meeting, both managements of the NIA and FRSC agreed to consolidate on their long-standing relationships through regular interactions.
