NHRC commences probe into recent killings in Jos

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has commenced investigation into the recent killing of innocent citizens in Plateau State.

Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mrs Oti Ovrawah, disclosed this while reacting to the killing of 27 people who were reportedly murdered while taking refuge at Nkiedonwhro community in Bassa Local Government Area of the State.

In the same vein, the Commission has condemned the killing of about 15 persons including a pregnant woman by unknown gunmen at Mgboshimili community in Obio Akpo Local Government Area of Rivers state and the killing of about four persons in a Hausa settlement in Asaba, Delta state.

The NHRC boss said, as part of its statutory mandate, the Commission’s North Central Zonal office in Jos had commenced immediate investigation into the Nkiedonwhro incident.

While expressing concern over the recent upsurge of killings in different parts of the country, she called on the law enforcement agencies to continue to be vigilant to assure citizens of protection in their communities in line with human rights expectations.

In view of the foregoing, Mrs Ovrawah called on the various security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to justice to forestall further occurrences.

The NHRC boss urged Nigerians to promote peaceful coexistence and national unity by being their brother’s keeper, no matter which part of the country they found themselves. She used the medium to commiserate with the families of the deceased and the government and people of Plateau state in general.
