NATIONAL Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), on Tuesday, launched a national geological museum for the archiving and scientific breakthroughs and geological heritage.
Speaking during the inauguration in Abuja, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Architect Olamilekan Adegbite, said the agency could play catch-up by learning fast ways to reduce exportation of mining equipment for repairs.
He, therefore, urged the agency to develop its human capacity with a view to reducing dependence on foreign countries as Nigeria still lacks International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) certification of equipment.
The minister also implored the agency to encourage women to come off the hierarchy and make valuable contributions to the mineral sector.
According to him: “We don’t want this to continue. Sending our equipment to South Africa is not acceptable. South Africa should not be better than us. If they are ahead, we can play catch-up by learning fast.
“What we should be doing is developing our capacity. So that nobody has to take anything out of the country. If we have certification in Nigeria it is easier for equipment to be repaired officially in Nigeria than taking it out of the country.
“ISO certification; let us do what is needed to be done. Let us put our weight behind it and get it done so that people can come from other places to come and certify in Nigeria.
“Nigeria is a very big country, we are nearly 200 million people, I am sure we have the resources in terms of female capacity, so let us train our people so that we can achieve this thing. I know that the NGSA has been doing very well, they are at the forefront amongst our agencies and they have a lot of competent people.” He added.
Earlier, the NGSA Director-General, Mr Abdulrazaq Garba, said the museum is a great national asset that contributes to culture, research, scientific education and public engagement in a number of important ways.
He said his agency was also collaborating with institutions both locally and internationally with a view to adding value to the activities of NGSA.
