The Peace Action for Rapid Transformation of Nigeria Early Response (PARTNER), in collaboration with Mercy Corps, has trained 40 civil society organisations on peace in Kaduna.
Participants were trained in conflict resolution, early warning and early response, peacebuilding, and national cohesion.
The Chief of Party Peace Action for Rapid Transformation of Nigeria Early Response (PARTNER), Mr Danjuma Dawop, told journalists in Kaduna on Friday that the project, which is in collaboration with the Kaduna State Peace Commission, Plateau State Peace Agency, and Network for Peace Journalists, cuts across nine states of the federation.
He said the PARTNER programme, implemented by Mercy Corp., is currently in nine states, starting with the first-tier states in Plateau and Kaduna states; Kano, Katsina, Kogi, and Benue states are in the second-tier; and the programme was further expanded to include Nasarawa, Zamfara, and Niger states in the third-tier.
“We are here to organise a three-day train the trainers (ToT) workshop for 40 heads of civil society organisations (CSO).
The programme is built on three anchors: early warning and early response, peacebuilding, and national cohesion.
We want to ensure that our programmes and interventions don’t cause conflict in the communities where they are carried out.
“After the workshop, those trained would step down the training to other stakeholders, adopting a sensitive approach and a do-no-harm strategy.
“Network for Peace Journalists in Kaduna State is our strategic partner in these activities. Our partners are the ones that implement these programmes in their areas.
It is the strategy used by Mercy Corp. to align with donor expectations. We feel that more and more journalists are influential in creating a peaceful or conflict-free community in terms of what they write and in their opinion.”
Speaking on the impact of the programme, Danjuma said, “The programmes we implemented have witnessed lots of achievements in the number of people we met and the number of activities carried out. I’ve seen an evolution in how communities have transformed from conflict-prone to conflict-proactive communities.”
Also speaking, the team leader, Network for Peace Journalists Kaduna (NPJK), Ibrahima Yakubu, who was also a participant in the three-day training, expressed happiness over the training.
According to him, during the training, they were taught ways of promoting peace in journalism, one of which is the early warning system of reporting, among others.
He said all the lessons learned during the workshop would be shared with the rest of the group
He thanked Mercy Corp. for bringing the project to Kaduna.
