A Non-Governmental Organisation, Slum and Rural Health Initiative (SRHIN) has sensitised Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in New Kuchingoro and Durumi camps in Abuja on mental health literacy as part of its Brave Heart Project.

The sensitisation and community dissemination conference for the Brave Heart Project, which took place on February 17 and 18 at the New Kuchingoro and Durumi IDP camps, respectively, doubled as the inaugural monthly mental health day in both IDP camps

At the conference, the Brave Heart Project Policy Lead, Ruth Oladele, urged the young IDPs and community members to uphold the positive mental health attitudes they had learnt from the project.

Oladele also emphasised the need for the community members to celebrate the monthly mental health day, a day earmarked in the camps to create awareness about mental health and to celebrate their peace and resilience.

Some young persons who were beneficiaries of the project commended the success of the Brave Heart Project in improving mental health literacy and reducing stigmatisation of mental health disorders in the camp.

One of them said, “I never knew that mental disorders such as depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders, were what I was battling with after the displacement by insurgency attacks from our hometown. During the training, I learnt what mental disorders are and that it is okay to seek help.”

Another beneficiary said that the Brave Heart Project had not only helped to reduce her symptoms of PTSD and depression, but had also equipped her to provide mental health information and support to other young persons.

The Brave Heart project, funded by Grand Challenges Canada and her global mental health partners, is a mental health intervention aimed at improving the mental wellbeing of young persons in IDP camps using the triad of mental health literacy sessions, entrepreneurship training and passing of a local mental health policy.
