Founder of Mother and Girl-Child Protection Initiative (MAGI), Alhaja Titilade Malik, has expressed concern over the rate at which women in Nigeria are impoverished owing to lack of education and unequal opportunity.
She said this at a seminar organised by her initiative, tagged: “Women and youth empowerment: A tool for eradicating poverty and enhancing national development” recently, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
According to Malik, women lack the necessary support needed to help them cater for their daily activities.
She, however, advocated the need for women to learn trade or acquire a particular skill, instead of seeking for white collar jobs as it would go a long way in making women more independent.
Mailk also disclosed that the initiative had provided training and sensitisation for over 8000 girls and women and had also trained about 100 secondary school leavers in various skills as well as sponsoring secondary school students in public examinations.
The guest lecturer on the occasion, Dr Peju Layiwola, explained how Creative Art could be used as a way of empowerment.
She said that Creative Art had the potential of developing minds, adding that it could be used for therapy.
Dr Layiwola further explained “it is our art of culture that could help to put Nigeria in the front line and also help in boosting the country’s revenue.”
She advised that skills acquisition should be included in school curriculum to help train future leaders.
