A faith-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), Beautiful Gate Handicap People Centre, Jos, Plateau State, in collaboration with Bauchi State Television Authority (BATV), has gifted eight persons with disabilities (PWDs) wheelchairs to enhance their mobility.
The gesture was part of the activities marking the 2024 edition of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities.
Speaking at the presentation of the wheelchairs, the District Head of Lame in Bauchi Emirate, Yakubu Aliyu Lame, urged people to look around their environments and offer assistance to persons with disabilities, including providing mobility aids and educational scholarships.
Aliyu Yakubu Lame said, “We have many PWDs in our communities who need our help to take them off begging, and it’s a challenge for us to lend a helping hand.”
The District Head also emphasised the importance of education for PWDs to improve their lives and commended Beautiful Gate Handicap People Centre, Jos, for partnering with BATV in putting smiles on the faces of the PWDs.
A representative of the Beautiful Gate Handicap People Centre, Jos, Sandra Nanbam, said the organisation has distributed, free of charge, forty thousand mobility items, including tricycles, walking frames, and crutches, both within and outside Nigeria.
She said the founder of the centre, Ayuba Guwfan, who is also a PWD, had vowed to help persons like him gain access to mobility.
According to her, “Today, Ayuba is the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, so I urge you to go to school and improve yourselves.”
Sandra Nanbam reminded the beneficiaries of the importance of routine immunisation, especially against the wild polio virus, which is the cause of most disabilities among today’s recipients.
She stated that the Centre will continue to collaborate with organisations to assist persons with disabilities (PWDs) and commended BATV for reaching out to them.
The Executive Secretary of the Bauchi State Agency for Persons with Disabilities, Brisca Jerome, said the agency trains PWDs in various skills to help them become self-reliant. She encouraged the beneficiaries to take the opportunity and enrol with the agency.
The Managing Director of BATV, Muhammad Garba Ningi, stated that the distribution was part of the organisation’s corporate social responsibility.
This year’s International Day for Persons with Disabilities is celebrated under the theme “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.”
The beneficiaries were selected from across the state, including men, women, and students, among whom was a first-class graduate in mathematics, Muhammad Gadau. They were full of gratitude for the gesture from BATV and Beautiful Gate Handicap People Centre Jos.
