New LASU VC assumes office, meets various staff unions

The ninth substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University(LASU) Ojo, Prof Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello has assumed office today, Monday.

She was appointed among two other competing colleagues recommended by the selection committee to perform the role by the Lagos State governor, who is also the visitor to the university, Mr Babajide Sanwo- Olu, last week.

Her assumption to duty which is expected to last five years is believed to be the end of the nine months old controversies surrounding the appointment of a new vice-chancellor to succeed the immediate and eighth substantive vice-chancellor of the university, Prof Olanrewaju Fagbohun whose tenure ended and left the office since January.

Tribune Online gathered that the new vice-chancellor, who is the wife to the state’s Commissioner for the Environment, and one-time Secretary to the state government, Mr Tunji Bello, had a rousing welcome to the campus where she has been working for many decades.

The university’s spokesman, Mr Ademola Adekoya said the leadership of various staff unions particularly the senior staff and non-academic staff as well as students of the university and the top management staff including the acting vice-chancellor, Mr Oyedamola Oke, were all around to welcome her.

“We also have students from various tertiary institutions in the state including the Lagos State Polytechnic( LASPOTECH) Ikorodu, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education(AOCOED), Otto\ Ijanikin, Michael Otedola College of Primary Education( MOCPED) Noforija- Epe and the University of Lagos(UNILAG), Akoka, and so forth, around to welcome her,” Mr Adekoya added.

Mr Adekoya said the new vice-chancellor who he said was overwhelmed by the rousing welcome accorded her had already received the leadership baton from the acting vice-chancellor, Prof Oke and also addressed members of staff generally.

He further explained that Mrs Tunji Bello had started meetings with the various stakeholders within the university community at the unions level.

Mrs Tunji-Bello is a Professor of Physiology at LASU College of Medicine since October 2007.

She joined LASU as an Assistant Lecturer in 1988 and rose through the ranks to become Associate Professor in 2005 at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos(UNILAG), Idi-Araba.

She attended in 2012, Course 34 of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru.
She holds a Fellowship Award of the Physiological Society of Nigeria and was also appointed a Fellow of the Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Mitigation in 2019.

Meanwhile, the National Union of Lagos State Students(NULASS) has congratulated the new vice-chancellor for her appointment, saying the development is a result of “hard work, consistency, dedication to duty and track record of outstanding performance.”

The union in a statement on Monday signed by the National Vice President(1), Mr Olufowobi Remilekun and the Secretary-General, Mr Jinaidu Ayorinde, who is a student of University of Jos(UNIJOS) said the union which comprises indigenes and residents of Lagos State schooling in tertiary institutions nationwide, had no doubt that Prof Tunji- Bello is equal to the task particularly based on her track records in her previous big assignments to the university including as
a two-term Deputy Vice-Chancellor and a one-term acting Vice-Chancellor.

The union added that while wishing the second female substantive vice-chancellor in the history of the university well in her new roles, it is expected that she takes LASU to a greater height.
