NEMA, USAID, WHO move to contain Monkey Pox in Borno IDP camps

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Tuesday rolled out measures toward containing the spread of Monkey Pox among Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Maiduguri, Borno State.

According to a statement made available to Nigerian Tribune by NEMA’s Head of Press Unit, Mr. Manzo Ezekiel, the Initiative was complemented by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and World Health Organisation (WHO).

He said: “In a swift response to the alert of a suspected Monkey Pox case at one of the IDP Camps in Maiduguri, raised by a netizen, NEMA medical team, supported by staff of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Works Health Organisation (WHO), has successfully isolated the patient, her mum and those she has come in contact with.

“According to preliminary assessment, the Mother stated that the Child has been down with rashes for two weeks and none of her siblings has such symptoms.

“The Borno Local Government Disease Surveillance Team has taken her blood sample for further examination while she continues to receive medical attention.

“We have, however, escalated the case to appropriate health authorities, including NCDC.

“We have directed the strict compliance of all prevention measures against the spread of the infectious disease across all our camps, including practice of proper, regular hand-washing, and disinfection of the surroundings.”
