The Nigeria electronic Fraud Forum (NeFF) has expressed intention to step up its fight against cyber crime through enforcement of the provisions of cyber crime prohibition act of 2015.
This was made known to newsmen by its Chairman, Mr Dipo Falokun during NeFF’s end of year dinner. Falokun said the Nigeria e-Fraud Forum intend to hold workshop that will address the provisions of cyber crime prohibition Act of 2015 as it affects electronic payment, just as it will also be creating awareness to the general public on cyber crime.
His words:”the first thing we intend to do next year is to have a workshop that will address the provision of cyber crime prohibition act of 2015 as it affects electronic payment.
“That act has very rich provisions on the prevention and the prosecution of those that commit cyber crime. As a forum, we want to leverage the provision of that act. In other to do this, we will be calling all the stakeholders together in the first quarter of next year.”
On why there is rising incidence of e-fraud, Fatokun said the major problem when it comes to e-Fraud can be divided into two, gullibility and greed.
“We intend to do an industry wide awareness. Gullibility is also a product of ignorance because if you are not aware of what you need to do then you will not do it. “If you are not aware of what you need to avoid, you will not avoid it. So, we intend to do an awareness for all Nigerians so that when they receive text messages or they receive emails or they receive information that will lead to them being defrauded, then they will ignore it and not fall prey to the fraudsters.” he said.
NeFF also intends to operationalize the dedicated electronic payment and crime unit that is going to assist in the apprehension and prosecution of fraudsters.
