The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has emphasised the urgent need for a well-structured and independent adjudication system to ensure industrial harmony and drive economic growth.
Speaking at the 3rd Annual Labour Adjudication and Arbitration Forum (LAAF) in Abuja, President and Chairman of Council NECA, Dr. Ifeanyi Okoye, stressed that swift, impartial, and fair dispute resolution is critical for maintaining trust between employers and employees.
The event, themed “Labour Adjudication and Appellate Jurisdiction: Challenges and Prospects,” gathered key stakeholders to discuss the evolving complexities of labour relations.
According to Dr Okoye, the role of a strong appellate system in upholding justice and fostering industrial peace cannot be overstated. He called for immediate action to strengthen the credibility and efficiency of courts and arbitration mechanisms to adapt to modern labour realities.
“At NECA, we firmly believe that an independent and well-structured adjudication system is essential for industrial peace and economic stability,” Okoye stated. “Swift, fair, and impartial decisions by our courts and arbitration mechanisms will foster trust between employers and employees. It is our collective duty, as social partners, to ensure that these institutions remain effective and credible.”
He further urged the government to fast-track the passage of reviewed labour laws to align with global best practices and current realities. Additionally, he called for the resuscitation of the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC), emphasising its pivotal role in fostering constructive engagement among social partners.
“The NLAC is invaluable in promoting industrial harmony and sustainable economic development. It must remain active to facilitate meaningful dialogue between employers, employees, and policymakers,” Okoye added.
The forum concluded with a consensus on the need for legislative reforms, enhanced arbitration mechanisms, and a strengthened labour adjudication system to drive industrial peace and economic progress.
