NDYC urges youths to avoid drug abuse

The Niger Delta Youth Council Worldwide (NDYC), in partnership with the Lucky and Mandy Global Foundation and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has organized a Mental Health Summit in Calabar, Cross River State.

Held at the Professor Eyo Ita Hall, the summit focused on the theme ‘Your Mind Matters,’ with the aim of raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and addiction, particularly among young entrepreneurs in the Niger Delta and beyond.

In his keynote address, Prof. Dan Nwogbo discussed the psychological impact of drug abuse on young people, emphasizing that “to maintain a healthy mind, youths must avoid harmful substances like opioids and alcohol.”

Dr. Kelle Chokpa and Maxwell Ibli encouraged young entrepreneurs to “focus on their business rather than yielding to the allure of drug use, as success in business requires a clear and rational mind.”

Pharmacist Ezekiel Eze cautioned against the misuse of prescription medications, such as cough syrups, warning that they can “not only damage one’s mental health but also diminish overall cognitive function, impacting daily performance.”

Following the summit, Engr. Jator Abido, the National Coordinator of NDYC Worldwide, praised Cross River Governor Bassey Out and NDDC’s Managing Director and Chairman, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku and Hon. Chiedu Ebie, for their support of the initiative.

He encouraged young entrepreneurs “to prioritize their health while striving for business success and to steer clear of distractions, including drugs, stress, and anxiety.”

Furthermore, Hon. Beke Apere, Chairman of NDYC Worldwide, called on youths to avoid all forms of addiction and substance abuse for their own health, longevity, and well-being.

The summit was attended by NDYC members, representatives from the National Youth Council (Cross River Chapter), National Youth Corps members, civil society organizations, students, and youth leaders from the Niger Delta region.
