NDLEA seizes 206,204kg of hemp in Ondo

OFFICIALS of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)   Ondo state command on Wednesday said it has seized about 206,204kg of Indian hemp in the state in the last six months.

The state commander of the agency, Mohammad Sokoto who disclosed this during while briefing reporters on the achievements of the command in the last six months said no fewer than 101 suspects have been arrested by the command.

He stated that most of the suspects had been arraigned before the court saying 16 of the suspects had been convicted while some of them were rehabilitated, counselled or released on administrative bail.

The NDLEA boss said the agency is not only poised to enforce, arrest or seize and prosecution of offenders but also fighting and sensitising on the need to keep off drugs and Indian hemp.

He said “a total of 521 private and public secondary schools have been sensitised on the danger of drug abuse, trafficking and other drugs related crime such cultism, kidnapping, rape and gender based violence among others

According to him, a total of 24,596kg of Indian hemp was confiscated while and more than 237 hectares of drug farms were destroyed by the command.

Giving the analysis of the seizure, he said “total seizure of Indian hemp during the last six months stands as 24,596.983kg while psychotropic substance stand at 1.624kg, a total number of 19 cannabis farms measuring 37.835 hectares of 181.608kg of cannabis were destroyed and burnt”

He said “within the period, the chairman of the Indian hemp association in Ondo state has been successfully arrested and he is currently standing trial.

“Five vehicles and two landed properties used for the concealing of drugs have been seized by the state command”

Sokoto linked the upsurge in criminal activities in the state to high rate of drug abuse, saying the command will not relent in its effort to fight drug abuse in the state.

He however solicited for the cooperation of the member of public to put an end to drug abuse and other criminal activities in the state.
