The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has launched a 3-month Graduate Attachment Program (GAP) in Imo State.
The program aims to equip graduates with the necessary knowledge, experience, and skills for the workplace, as part of the agency’s commitment to combating unemployment in the country.
In his keynote address, the Director-General of NDE, Mallam Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo, emphasised the importance of the program in addressing the issue of unemployment among graduates.
He commended the beneficiaries for being selected among the numerous applicants.
Fikpo explained that NDE, as the leading employment generation agency in the country, recognized the limited job opportunities available for unemployed graduates.
As a result, the Chukwuma Committee was established to find ways to tackle unemployment.
He stated, “It was observed that skill acquisition was being neglected, and as a result, everyone was searching for white-collar jobs with their files.”
Since then, NDE has been dedicated to skill acquisition, training, and empowerment initiatives.
The GAP program aims to reorient graduates, teaching them essential skills that will enhance their employability. It seeks to equip them with the necessary tools to succeed in the workplace.
During the event, the Imo State Coordinator of NDE, Barr. Chisara Winefred Eqwim-Chima, represented by Mr Emmanuel Iwuagwu, Deputy Director of the Vocational Skills Department, expressed gratitude to NDE for implementing an empowerment program that would benefit graduates in Imo State.
She encouraged the beneficiaries to view the program as a rare privilege and urged them to demonstrate dedication, diligence, and seriousness throughout the program.
Mrs Anoshiri Kechikarere, Head of Special Public Works (SPW) at NDE Imo State, reminded the participants that the training if taken seriously, would positively impact their work and future endeavours.
She advised them to adhere to work ethics, exhibit good character, and promote teamwork.
In response, Mrs Okoroji Ijeoma Christiana, one of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude to NDE for the opportunity to participate in the GAP program.
She assured the agency that they would meet their expectations and requested that NDE continue its efforts in addressing unemployment in the country.
The event included a photo of the Imo State Coordinator of NDE, Barr. Chisara Winefred Eqwim-Chima, standing with the participants during the flag-off of the GAP program in Imo State.
