THE National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has flagged off what it dubbed ‘Matured People’s Programme’ in Akure, Ondo State.
The Director General of the NDE, Malam Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo, said during the flag-off that the programme “is one of the schemes of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) aimed at catering for the welfare retirees, the aged and other senior citizens of Nigeria.”
Fikpo, who was represented by the state coordinator of the NDE, Mr O.M. Adelodun, said: “In order for the retirees and the aged not to retire into penury or not to become calamity to their family at their old age, the NDE deems it fit to cater for this category of citizens by providing sustainable and reasonable loans to cater for their welfare.
“It is on this note that some aged in the society were selected and loans were disbursed to them to start a business of their choice.”
“The directorate recognises the fact that this category of Nigerians must not be left alone to suffer or wonder about at their old age.
“It should be noted that the amount granted to the beneficiaries are not a grant, but a loan that will be paid back after a few months of moratorium. Therefore, it is with the objective of tackling the challenges of staying idle after retirement or at old age.”
