For the people of Onicha Ugbo and Idumuje Ugboko in Aniocha North Local Government of Area of Delta State, the intervention of the failed road linking their communities with Ewohimi and other towns in Edo state by the Niger Delta Development Commission is the greatest new year gift to the road users .
Following the outcry by the people, the Federal government through the NDDC moved swiftly to bring the hardship encountered by motorists on the road to an end.
The road which leads motorists from the Eastern states and Delta State to Auchi, Okenne, Abuja and beyond was for a long time abandoned with commuters diverting to other routes of long distances.
It was on record that heavy duty trucks conveying cement were stuck on the road due to its deplorable state.
Today the story has changed as the contracting, firm ULO Consultants has completed the two-kilometre axis of the road project as specified by NDDC.
A staff of the company, Gabriel Okpunor, while conducting news men around the project, said it was executed when NDDC had not released money to the company.
“This road was impassable. It was a nightmare to motorists especially the villages on this road. So, what we the company did was to mobilise to site and get the work done when nothing had been paid. We still went further to do palliative work on theroad not covered by the contract agreement.” Okpunor said
Former member of the House of Representatives and now senatorial aspirant under PDP in Delta North, Prince Ned Nwoko, expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done on the bad spots of theroad.
Speaking at the site with reporters, Honourable Nwoko, commended ULO consultants and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachukwu, for the intervention.
According to him, the intervention was a great relief to towns in the area as well as motorists.
