NAWOJ, others harp on solutions to gender-based violence

In its bid to put an end to Gender-Based Violence, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Oyo state chapter in collaboration with Women in Media, Voice of Women Foundation and other stakeholders has held a symposium in other to put an end to GBV.

The event was held on Thursday at the Institute of Church hall, Samonda In commemoration of a 16-day global Activism against Gender-Based Violence which runs between 25th November and 10th December.

Speaking with journalists, Chairperson, NAWOJ, Jadesola Ajibola, explained that the symposium is meant to find a way to put an end to Gender-based violence, and discuss who is violating the victims, and how to prevent GBV in society.

She further stated that everyone has a role to play in the campaign against gender-based violence adding that NAWOJ in collaboration with the other stakeholders was also holding the symposium in other to sensitise everyone against GBV.

Ajibola further noted that women is not the only victim of gender-based violence, adding that men are also victims of GBV but couldn’t speak about it.

She said “This year the Unite Campaign theme is investing to prevent violence against women and girls and will focus on the importance of financing different prevention strategies to stop violence from occurring in the first place

“Unfortunately women are not only the victims of GBV but men are also victims but couldn’t speak out,” Jadesola concluded.

She however advised female journalists and other women to give support to each other in other to have more successful women in society.

Also speaking at the event, one of the speakers at the event, A lawyer and relationship adviser, Foluso Olapo, stated that violence in marriage can be traced to family.

He however advised singles to put into consideration, investigation of the family of the man or woman they are getting married to and as well put love first before going into marriage.

Speaking, Amira of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Nigeria, FOMWAN ,Oyo state chapter, Dr Latifat Dairo, stated the programme is one of the programs that should come up more often for everyone, in general, to put a stop to violence.

Dairo who was represented by a member of the group, Surura Oyero noted that violence if not stopped will not allow peace to reign in homes and in society, adding that when people are not happy as a result of violence being faced, it will affect their way of life including their religion aspect.

In his speech, the Director of Institute of Church Society, Very Reverend Kolade Fadahunsi, noted that GBV is something that can lead a family to disarray.

Adding that violence can affect the level of people’s productivity in society which according to him will affect society in general.

He however advised that in a way to reduce violence in society, there must be creation of more awareness against Gender based violence.
