Navy arrests 2 suspects over attacks on Chevron facilities in Warri

In a bid to further curtail oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta region, operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS DELTA) have arrested two suspected members of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) in Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State on Thursday at undisclosed locations.

The suspects’ names were given as Felix Miyenminiya, 53 and Stanley Tongha, 35.

They were allegedly behind attacks on some facilities belonging to Chevron Nigerian Limited (CNL) in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State between the months of May and July.

Commander, NNS Delta, Warri Naval Command, Commodore Joseph Dzunve, while parading the suspects on Saturday in Warri, said the Navy and other relevant sister agencies were doing their best to curb further attacks on pipeline installations at different locations in the Niger Delta axis.

“You are aware of the recent series of attacks on oil and gas facilities in the Niger Delta and in particular Delta State for which some groups of person claimed responsibilities.

“You will also recall that the Nigerian Navy and security agencies under Operation Delta Safe have been doing their best to eradicate these attacks.

“Today, I am pleased to inform you that after several efforts, NNS Delta has arrested two suspects responsible for the attacks on Chevron Nigeria Ltd facilities witnessed between May and July 2016, around Warri North Local Government Area of Delta state,” the naval boss disclosed.

He said the two suspects had provided useful information, adding that the Navy and other security agencies are on the trail of other fleeing members of the dreaded militant group.

Meanwhile, one of the suspects, Felix Miyenminiya, who is a beneficiary of the Amnesty Programme, said “I don’t know any Avengers, na my house I dey when them come arrest me; them say gun and dynamite dey my house.

“I tell them say I never set my eyes on that kind thing since when I accept my Amnesty I never try such thing in my life; I tell them make them check my house, my car, everywhere; am totally innocent.”

Miyenminiya, who is an uncle to Tongha, said since he surrendered his arms to the Federal Government some years ago, he had been off criminalities.

“Since I surrendered my arms, I remain calm in Sapele, I have not been to my village for a long time now; am shocked myself here, am from Adagbrassa village Ogbudugbudu main town in Warri North.

“Why I was arrested, my sister’s son used to come to my place at times, he was the one who brought the Navy to my place.

“He confessed to them that he brought arms to my house that I sent him,” Miyenminiya noted in disjointed English.

The second suspect, Tongha, he was introduced into pipeline vandalism by his uncle and boss, Miyenminiya.

“It is not a false accusation; it’s a truth. He (Miyenminiya) is a “General,” we are five in number.

“He sends us to go and deliver arms at Abitaye community where am from, them give us arms with dynamites to go and bomb the pipeline and come back.

“He say him wan make call with Chevron people make them give us money, I don’t know the People he even call, when he make the call finish, them come give five of us N60,000 each, so that last two months wen pass so na him call me take join body dey do the job.

“I no go lie, the last place him send us go burst pipeline na for Abitaye side the same place; na my uncle na him dey sponsor me; na when them catch me, I carry Navy go him place say na him be my Oga,” Tongha confessed.

Commodore Dzunve assured the public to continue their legitimate business activities in the maritime domain, noting that the Navy is strongly committed to ensuring a conducive and peaceful environment for legitimate trades.
