NAUS condemns abduction of 20 medical students

Published by

The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has said that it is deeply outraged by the recent kidnapping of 20 medical students on the Otukpo-Otukpa-Enugu Road, which occurred on Thursday, August 15.

The students were en route to a significant academic convention organised by the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students when the ugly incident occurred.

President, National Association of University Students, Comrade Obaji Marshal in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, called on relevant government agencies to take immediate and effective action to secure the safe return of the kidnapped students and to prevent such incidents from recurring.

The Marshal said the abduction highlights a severe lapse in the security apparatus meant to protect citizens, especially students, who are the intellectual backbone of society.

“The vulnerability of these students, despite travelling on a major federal road, raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of our national security strategy.

“NAUS stands firmly in solidarity with the affected students and their families during this trying time. We are unwavering in our commitment to ensuring that students across the nation can pursue their education in an environment free from fear and intimidation.

“We demand that the relevant government agencies take immediate and effective action to secure the safe return of the kidnapped students and to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

“In light of this incident, we call upon the federal and state governments to overhaul the security measures in place along major transit routes, particularly those frequented by students.

“It is not enough to react after such incidents occur; proactive measures must be implemented to ensure the safety of all citizens, especially the youth, who are the future of this nation.

“NAUS will not rest until these students are safely reunited with their families, and those responsible are held accountable for their actions.

“We urge all stakeholders, including educational institutions, parents, and civil society groups, to join us in demanding accountability and effective action from our government.

“Our resolve to advocate for the safety and rights of university students remains unshaken. We will continue to push for systemic changes that ensure students can focus on their education without the threat of violence or insecurity,” he stated.
