National Blue Economy Strategy, key to economic growth — Oyetola

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, has disclosed that the development of the National Blue Economy Strategy Document is a significant step towards enhancing the nation’s economic growth.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday at the closing session of the national stakeholders validation workshop, the minister reaffirmed that the framework is crucial in the protection of the country’s marine and coastal ecosystems.

He said, “Throughout the discussions, we have explored innovative strategies, identified key challenges, and shared best practices in harnessing the potential of our marine and coastal resources.

“This clearly demonstrates that our vision for a sustainable blue economy must be anchored in collaboration, inclusivity, and a shared commitment to sustainability.

“Let us also remember that unlocking the full potential of all sub-sectors of the blue economy requires a strategic, sustainable approach built on research, collaboration, and public-private partnerships.

Oyetola therefore commended key stakeholders for their contributions towards the success of the workshop aimed at draughting a framework for the country’s maritime economy.

“As we draw this fruitful consultation, validation workshop, and development session to a close, I wish to express my profound gratitude to the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) and the Kingdom of Norway for their support in helping Nigeria establish its National Blue Economy Strategy document.

“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for your active participation and contributions over the past three days.

“Your presence here signifies a collective commitment to advancing the blue economy in Nigeria, an endeavour that is crucial for the sustainable management of our vast marine resources and the wellbeing of our communities,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Senate Committee Chairman of Marine Economy, Sen. Bashir Sani, said at the workshop that the National Assembly has passed the second reading of the Coastguard Bill.

He said it is necessary for NASS to assist the maritime industry with legislation that will open up the sector and grow the country’s economy.

A representative of the participants, Prof. Bamidele O. Omitoyin, the President of the of the Association of Nigerian Fisheries Scientists, University of Ibadan, provided a vote of thanks, acknowledging support of AU-IBAR and contributions from the participants and the National Consultant finalising the Nigeria Blue Economy Strategy.
