Nation without moral education will collapse —Don

A Chief Lecturer and director, Academic Planning Unit, Federal College of Education, Special, Oyo, Dr Paul Ademola Ojebode, has said that any society that is morally bankrupt stands the risk of collapse.

While delivering the 9th inaugural lecture of the college recently, Dr Ojebode said the role of moral education is to minimize, if possible to eradicate, all forms of ills in the society, teaching people to work and live together in harmony.

He noted that if the present trend in crime continues, civilisation itself will be in jeopardy, and the court will be unable to cope with the amount of work involved which he said could result to a total breakdown of law and order.

He expressed regret that violence has entered schools and communities where various teenagers and even adults oppose any attempt by teachers to control and educate their children in moral education.

“Moral laxity is at the highest order. It is believed that no nation can survive or progress when such unpatriotic activities tend to be rampant and go unchecked,” he said.

Ojebode listed the different agencies that impact on the moral education of a child as the home, school, church, peers group and mass media. These he said have definite roles in the educational development of a child.

Ojebode, who spoke on ‘Eclipse of Religion in the Contemporary Nigerian Society: Which Way to Navigate’, declared that the doctrine of peace and love are inherent in all religions, and that if the adherents do not pursue peace, it means that they have disobeyed the clear injunction of their religions.

He then called on all to live by the correct teaching of the various religions. He also suggested that Christianity and Islam should be well taught in schools.
