NATE calls for full recognition of Polytechnic graduates

The Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE), has called for the full recognition of polytechnic graduates in Nigeria, citing the growing marginalisation of polytechnic education in the country.

This was disclosed at the induction and awards presentation ceremony organised by the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE) in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering, The Polytechnic of Ibadan, on Thursday in Ibadan.

Speaking at the event, themed ‘The Emerging Technologist’, the Guest speaker and Head of the Department, Faculty of Engineering, the Polytechnic of Ibadan, Dr. D.A. Oke, expressed concerns over the trend of converting polytechnics into universities in Nigeria, while countries like Germany and China are taking the opposite approach by converting universities into polytechnics.

“It is quite unfortunate that most polytechnics in Nigeria are being converted into universities. Meanwhile, in developed countries like Germany and China, they are converting universities to polytechnics. This reverse trend in Nigeria will make it difficult for the country to develop technologically.”

He further emphasised the importance of technologists in nation-building, stating that polytechnic graduates are critical to Nigeria’s development.

He lamented that the Nigerian government does not recognise polytechnic graduates as they should, contrary to the original vision of the founding fathers who established these institutions.

“As professionals, we have a lot to do to ensure we are recognised. We must distinguish ourselves from quacks, be truthful, reliable, and committed to building the country,” he added.

Oke also noted the contributions of polytechnic graduates, citing the example of the Oyo State anthem, which was composed by the music department of The Polytechnic of Ibadan during the administration of late governor Abiola Ajimobi.

In his keynote address, the Chairman of Dalco Group, Soji Longe, urged the inductees to prioritise unity and collaboration.

Speaking on the theme, “Linking the Professional Body with Alumni Association,” he encouraged the new professionals to share knowledge, protect their common interests, and seek broader opportunities through strong alumni networks.

Earlier in his address, the National President of the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE), Dominic Udoatan, represented by Vice President Oluremi Tokede, noted that the rapid advancements in technology offer key opportunities for driving Nigeria’s economic development and that the choices made today will shape the nation’s future.

Udoatan lauded the ingenuity and commitment of the new inductees, urging them to contribute meaningfully to societal progress through their expertise.

He also encouraged NATE Oyo State chapter to continue fostering innovation that promotes economic sustainability, ensuring Nigeria fully benefits from emerging technological trends.
