A sociopolitical group made up of young professionals from Kogi State has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for what it described as a firm and impartial stance in upholding democratic principles in Nigeria.
The commendation followed INEC’s decision to strike out the petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central in the Senate.
In a statement released on Thursday, the group said the decision was a “bold testament to INEC’s commitment to upholding the principles of justice, transparency, and constitutional propriety in Nigeria’s democratic process.”
The Convener of the group, Abdulrahman Zulqarnien Ozovehe, praised the electoral umpire for standing by the rule of law.

“By rejecting a petition that failed to meet the legal threshold, INEC has demonstrated its independence and reinforced the sanctity of the democratic process,” he stated.
Citing Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution, the group emphasized that INEC’s decision underscores its role as a guardian of electoral integrity.
“This decision not only protects the mandate freely given by the people of Kogi Central but also sends a strong message against the misuse of democratic tools for partisan or undemocratic purposes,” the statement read.
The group also warned individuals and groups behind the failed recall move to desist from further attempts. Referring to the petitioners as “faceless and conveniently anonymous constituents,” the group described their actions as an attempt to undermine political stability.
“As an intellectual organization committed to justice, transparency, and democratic values, we urge all citizens to remain vigilant and discerning in the face of actions that may undermine the political stability and progress of our state,” Ozovehe added.
Addressing the constitutional provisions for a recall, the group acknowledged it as a democratic tool but argued that recent developments do not reflect public dissatisfaction.
It cited Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent Eid homecoming to Ihima in Okehi Local Government Area, where she was reportedly received by “hundreds of thousands” of supporters.
“This clearly portrays a contrary image—as she was received and celebrated… thus showing their resolute and irrevocable support to the People’s Heroine, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, to continue serving as their duly elected Senator and representative in the Red Chamber of the National Assembly till 2027 and beyond,” the statement noted.
Describing the recall move as a “sham” and a “politically motivated” effort, the group urged the “overly loud minority” behind it to accept INEC’s verdict and avoid further public embarrassment.
The group concluded by urging all stakeholders to draw lessons from the development and recommit themselves to strengthening the country’s democracy.
“INEC’s verdict has put an emphatic final nail in the lid of what was a politically motivated recall process against an outstanding and effective representative of the people,” the statement added.
