NASS to support Tinubu’s vision to modernise armed forces

The National Assembly has pledged to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initiative to modernise Nigeria’s armed forces into a world-class force.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the assurance at the inaugural high-level roundtable of the National Defence College (NDC) Irregular Warfare Centre in Abuja.

Akpabio emphasized the importance of equipping the military with cutting-edge tools, training, and intelligence to tackle security challenges effectively.

He also stressed the need for professionalism, discipline, and respect for human dignity within the military.

The Senate President urged the military to uphold these virtues to ensure trust between the community and citizens.

The Federal Government is tackling insecurity through a comprehensive strategy involving government agencies, civil society, and the private sector. Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru highlighted the importance of addressing poverty, inequality, and unemployment to combat insecurity.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, stressed the value of joint task forces in securing the country and protecting citizens’ lives and property.

The National Defence College’s Irregular Warfare Centre was established in January 2025 to address evolving security dynamics and promote collaborative research. The centre conducts evidence-based research to enhance the effectiveness of defence and security services.

The roundtable aimed to present research findings and stimulate open and constructive dialogue on security challenges in Nigeria.

The National Assembly’s support for President Tinubu’s initiative is expected to drive progress in modernising Nigeria’s armed forces.
