Nasarawa govt threatens principals over extortion

NASARAWA State government has warned principals of secondary schools across the state who indulge in collecting school fees from students despite the state’s free education policy to desist from the act of face sanctions.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hajiya Ramatu Ajuji-Abubakar, gave the warning on Tuesday while speaking to newsmen in Lafia, the state capital.

She noted that the free education policy implemented by the state government is still on course, and that all principals should abide by it in totality.

“Students are not supposed to pay any money and any principal caught extorting money from students in the name of school fees will be sanctioned.

“Students in all public boarding schools across the state are also not supposed to pay money or give any food item, as the government has taken full charge of their feeding,” she said.

She also disclosed that five principals in the state secondary schools have been removed for indulging in sharp practices.

The commissioner also warned the leadership of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in the state not to charge students any money without permission from the ministry.
