Academic activities are set to commence at Phoenix University Agwada, Nasarawa state by January 2024.
Phoenix University is a privately-run university located at the heart of Nasarawa State in Agwada, Kokona Local Government Area of the state.
The university sits on a 100-hectare expanse of land, part of which has already been developed for the take-off of the iniversity with the remainder reserved for future expansion.
Professor Abdullahi Bala, Pioneer Vice Chancellor of the institution who disclosed this on Wednesday in a maiden press briefing at the university campus in Agwada said the philosophy of the institution is to embrace a model of pragmatic teaching, learning and research, capable of creating a balance between practical and theoretical modes of teaching and learning.
Bala, the immediate past VC, Federal University of Technology Minna, explained that the university is not conceived to be the usual tertiary institution that is aimed at producing just graduates but committed to the provision of qualitative and functional education by looking beyond the classroom to unlock the ideas and potentials of students to define new paradigms of global growth, development and prosperity.
“We intend to produce skilled graduates who are not only employable, but are able to employ themselves and others,” Bala stated.
According to the VC, “One of the greatest challenges of university education in Nigeria is the disconnect between knowledge and morals. At Phoenix University, our vision is to be a leading centre of excellence, renowned and respected for the generation, dissemination, application and advancement of knowledge and also committed to moral and character development in the service of humanity.”
The VC said the university which aims to mobilise the best human and material resources available to provide highly qualitative and affordable education for the teeming youth of Nasarawa State
has received approval of all national regulatory agencies to begin with three faculties including natural and applied science, computing and that of social and management sciences with eight departments.
“On behalf of the management and staff of Phoenix University, Agwada, I welcome you to this maiden press briefing which is intended to introduce the University to the media and, through you, to the general public, especially people of Nasarawa State, where the University is located. This event provides a veritable platform to announce to the World that the University has taken off and is due to commence lectures in January, 2024.

“Phoenix University received formal approval and registration of the Federal Executive Council on 27th May, 2023 after fulfilling all initial regulatory requirements and was subsequently issued with provisional licence for its take-off by the National Universities Commission on Friday, 9th June, 2023.
“The iniversity received a Resource Verification Team from the National Universities Commission on Tuesday, 28th November, 2023 to inspect the adequacy of our facilities to commence academic activities. Owing to the quality of our infrastructural and academic resources, we recently received the final approval to commence formal academic activities and admissions into the 24 academic programmes that were presented for Resource Verification.
