NAPTIP DG urges lecturers to teach students dangers of trafficking

Mrs Julie Okah-Donli, the Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in
Persons (NAPTIP) has reiterated the need for lecturers in colleges of education to teach students the dangers of human trafficking.

She gave the charge on Wednesday in Lafia on the 2nd day of the three-day workshop tagged: Training of Trainers on Trafficking in Persons Issues, mainstreamed into Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) minimum standard.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop is for the North-Central zone, with participants from states under the zone.

NAN also reports that the workshop was organised by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD ), supported by NAPTIP, funded by the European Union.

Okah-Donli, who was represented by the Director of Legal and Prosecution, Mr Abdulrahim Shaibu, said that trafficking was now a major issue which lecturers in colleges of education must know and learn how it affects the country.

She added that “this training is designed to ensure that students are not deceived into accepting offers that will
turn them into slaves in the quest for greener pasture.

“Implementing the concept is fundamental in education curricula, a teacher education curriculum is a veritable tool for social development of the society, therefore, we need to strike a balance between standardisation and flexibility.

“It becomes necessary to ensure that the training of teachers to implement the mainstreamed issues in trafficking in persons is conducted in line with national needs and aspirations.”

Mrs Mojisola Sodeinde, the Head of Office, ICMPD West Africa, urged lecturers present at the event to ensure that the purpose of mainstreaming TIP issues was achieved.

According to her, lecturers are always in contact with students and that the ongoing training is to ensure that
issues surrounding trafficking are infused into NCE and basic school curricular.

She added that “this workshop, among other things, is for development of teachers’ guides on career subjects.

“ICMPD is also committed to supporting government programmes, especially in the area of education.”
