The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) has appealed to the federal and state governments to allow private schools to benefit from budgetary allocations to education.
The Lagos State chairman of NAPPS, Alhaji Akande Kamal, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.
Kamal said that private schools could benefit from the allocations through training of their teachers or invitation of their students for educational programmes, by the governments.
“For instance in Lagos State, there is a quiz competition usually organised for public school students where the winner becomes governor for a day,’’ he said.
The chairman NAPPS said that such a competition should be extended to private school students since their parents paid taxes.
According to him, it is unfair to prevent the students from benefiting from their parents’ taxes.
He expressed displeasure over alleged lack of interest in private schools by the governments, saying that they were mainly concerned with public schools.
“Nothing is benefited by private schools from budgetary allocations to education,’’ he said.
He called for a monitoring team for private schools to regulate the activities and ensure standards.
