The Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) and the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) in collaboration with the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE) and Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Delta State is organising a Mini Conference for geoscience students in tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.

Theme: “Emerging Energy Challenges: A Paradigm Shift in Geoscience Education’’.

The three-day event will take place at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE) and Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Delta State from 7-9 June, 2018. It will feature technical sessions, exhibitions, HR/Job fairs, Inter-University Quiz competitions, a hands-on field excursion to the PTI training rig and flow station.

Other similarly exciting activities during the mini conference includes the student leadership training summit for NAPE/NMGS student chapter executives, four (4) exciting pre-conference short courses to be facilitated by seasoned industry professionals and social events designed to engender professional networking/mentoring among academia and industry professionals.

Over 750 participants are expected to attend from relevant tertiary institutions and geoscience community in Nigeria, and about 93 technical papers are slated for oral and poster sessions.

According to Dr Andrew Ejayeriese, FNAPE, FNMGS, President of NAPE, the biennial mini-conference is one of the strong pillars of the NAPE

University Assistance Programme (UAP). It was conceived in 2002 to provide a platform and ambience for students studying the geosciences in Nigerian tertiary institutions for the exchange of technical knowledge, exhibition of new technologies and industry/ academia collaboration. It is also structured to build leadership, technical, presentation and networking skills of geoscience students.

Dr. Ejayeriese added that the Conference will examine the emerging global conditions challenging the energy sector and provide a platform for our tertiary institutions and policy makers to evolve curricula that will equip Nigerian students with the skills and competencies not only to compete with their peers globally but to prepare them for life after graduation.

Professor S.S Dada, President of Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) said the event will also focus on the quality of teaching and research methods in Geosciences education as well as meaningful linkages between the industry and the academia.

This year’s Mini- Conference is the 9th edition of the biennial event and it is being jointly hosted for the second time by NAPE and NMGS.
