Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has applauded the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, for approving the payment of £500,000 bursary awards to the final-year indigenes of the state studying Medicine, Maritime, and Aviation.
This commendation was contained in a statement signed by the Vice-President, Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs of NANS, Akinbodunse Sileola Felicia, on Sunday.
The governor has reportedly approved the payment of £500,000 each to final-year students of Oyo State origin studying medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, maritime, and aviation in tertiary institutions across the country.
The governor was also reported to have approved a sum of £100,000 as bursary awards for final-year students studying other courses.
Akinbodunse, who described the action of the governor as “humane and sterling” in the statement, noted that the bursary awards would go a long way in boosting the morale of the beneficiaries and easing the financial burden on their parents.
She said the governor’s approval came at the right time when the economic situation in the country is not palatable.

The NANS leader further observed that the bursary awards, which will also be extended to final-year students in dentistry and veterinary medicine, will serve as encouragement for thousands of students from the state to pursue academic studies in medicine-related courses, maritime, and aviation.

Akinbodunse added that the decision by the Oyo State governor to approve the building of a cloudware platform to register all tertiary students from the state will enable more students to benefit from the bursary awards.
While stating that the approval of the bursary awards was the icing on the cake for Oyo State students who have benefitted immensely from various interventions in the education sector by the Governor Makinde-led administration, she urged the governor not to relent in his administration’s efforts to enhance the delivery of quality education in the state.
The NANS National Vice-President, however, urged other state governors to emulate Governor Makinde by ensuring not only the regular payment of bursaries to their students but also increasing the amount being paid to reflect the current economic reality in the country.
