NANS bans award conferment by student unions indefinitely

THE National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has banned award conferment by all student Union bodies in the Country.

The NANS President, Bamidele Danielson made the declaration during the inauguration of the new executive of the Association at the weekend Abuja.

He explained that such awards conferments to organisations, groups or individuals had become a source of distraction to students and therefore suspended it.

Danielson also stressed the need for the apex student body to reform all unions under it towards improving the education system and welfare of members.

While lamenting on the state of education system in the country, he maintained that his leadership will work to ensure that the government improve learning conditions of all Nigerian students.

“The task before us is enormous but not insurmountable, there is work to be done.

The state of our educational system calls for immediate action, bold and swift. And we will act, not only to pressure the government to improve learning conditions, but to ensure that government and relevant  stakeholders come together to lay a new foundation for academic excellence that will transform our schools, colleges of educations, polytechnic and universities to meet the demands of a new age,” he said.

Earlier, the former NANS President, Yinka Dada urged government at all levels to dedicate the twenty-six percent of their budgets to the education sector as recommended by UNESCO.

He also advised Nigerians to be actively involved in the fight against corruption and tasked the NANS executive to hold school management and the government accountable.
