The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned students in Niger State against the dangers of alcohol abuse, citing the alarming rate of drug abuse among Nigerian youths.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by Mrs Harirah Abdullahi, Chief Regulatory Officer of NAFDAC, emphasised the importance of the programme, noting that 14.4 per cent or 14.3 million Nigerians, are victims of drug abuse.
The programme inaugurated at Government Day Secondary School, Kamfanin Bobi, and Ma’azu Ibrahim Commercial Secondary School, Kontagora, had the theme “Your Future Counts: Say No to Illicit Drugs and Yes to Life.”
Adeyeye explained that the programme was designed to educate students on the dangers of drug abuse and promote healthy lifestyles, adding that it was not intended to scare students but to have honest conversations with them about the dangers of drug abuse.
She also emphasised the role of teachers and parents in the fight against drug abuse, urging them to work together to identify and address behavioural problems in students.
In his remarks, Mallam Mohammed Bagobin, Principal of Government Day Secondary School, Kamfanin Bobi, appreciated NAFDAC for selecting his school for the programme and promised to carry the message across the community.
Similarly, Mallam Muhammad Nayawo, Principal of Ma’azu Ibrahim Commercial Secondary School, Kontagora, thanked NAFDAC for the initiative.
Nayawo, represented by Abdulsalam Shaifu, Vice Principal 1, urged the students to check for NAFDAC’s registration numbers and expiration dates before purchasing products.
The programme was attended by 194 students at Government Day Secondary School, Kamfanin Bobi, and 310 participants at Ma’azu Ibrahim Commercial Secondary School, Kontagora.
